ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing

ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing Class:

Beginning students should start with our two-day ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing class. ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing is a beginner-level sailing class that is taught all-on-the-water on our Catalina Capri Sailboat named ‘Superna’, so no classroom is needed.  ASA101 Basic Keelboat Sailing classes go from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM both days of the class.

In addition to the ASA Basic Keelboat Sailing Textbook, all our ASA101 students receive our internally developed Captain In You ASA101 Basic Keelboat Study Guide, which has proven effective in helping new students quickly learn the information required to gain ASA certification and cruise safely on their own.  Students learn all they need to get started sailing, including sailing vocabulary, principles of sailing, how to rig/hoist/set sails safely and correctly to obtain proper sail trim using halyards, outhaul, boom vang, mainsheet, jib sheets, winches, and traveler. Also learn to steer both under engine and sail, learn to come about and jibe properly, learn about safety equipment, proper commands at the helm, crew overboard recovery, learn to head up and bear away, sail on various points of sail including close hauled, close reach, beam reach, and broad reach, and much more.

Students sail on beautiful, safe Lake Nockamixon, which is part of Nockamixon State Park.  Please see the Location page for more information on Nockamixon State Park.

Class size: typically 2-4 students, with a maximum of 4.

Prerequisites: None.  This class is taught assuming students know nothing about sailing when they arrive, but by the time students leave, they can sail on a basic level and have a foundation for taking more advanced classes.

6. ASA Certification
7. Bring your own or use our Type V Personal Flotation Device for free.
8. Link to free PA Fish and Boat Commission-approved Boating Safety Course Included.  Not Required on Lake Nockamixon.

Students should bring a bag lunch and water or soft drinks both days, for when we have lunch on board our yacht.

How to save money?

Bundle ASA101 with ASA102 and or bundle ASA101 with ASA103 and save 5% on both classes.  Bundle ASA101, ASA102, and ASA103 and save 5% on all three classes.
